S IS FOR SELECT

Design S is a selection process that aims to showcase Sweden’s best design solutions. We welcome the submission of creative products and services in all fields of endeavour.

S IS FOR SELECT

To submit your design solution to the Design S selection process, use the
Digital Submission Form (new window). The description of your submission should contain an account of the challenges you faced, how your design solved the problem, and what the result was. You can read detailed instructions below.

The description of your submission enables the jury to assess a submission based on its unique set of circumstances without being limited by categories.

In order that the nominated and selected submissions can reflect contemporary Swedish design, it is a prerequisite that at least one person/organisation/company/ party involved in the project has a clear connection to Sweden (the designer, client, manufacturer). Submissions must have been launched on the market or entered into production after 1 January 2008 and cannot have previously participated in the Design S selection process.

If you wish to be inspired by seeing which submissions were nominated to receive a Design S in 2008, click here

A separate form must be sent in for each submission.

ILLUSTRATING YOUR SUBMISSION

Each submission must be accompanied by at least one and at most four digital colour photographs. The photographs must be in JPEG format, with a resolution of 72 dpi and a maximum size of 500 KB each. The photographs can depict physical objects, printed media, packaging, etc. Links to websites must be provided and films must be uploaded.

To make the jury’s work easier and to lessen any environmental impact, do not submit any original work(s) with your submission form. However, you must be prepared to send your original work(s) to Svensk Form should the jury request it.

LAST DATE FOR SUBMISSIONS

The last day for uploading submissions is Monday 15 March 2010.

SUBMISSION FEE

The submission fee for each separate entry is SEK 2100 plus Swedish VAT. Members of Svensk Form pay only SEK 1900 plus Swedish VAT. A submission may also consist of a series, collection, or system. When we have registered your digital submission we will send an invoice to the invoicing address you have given.

Note that payment must have reached us by 15 April at the latest for your submission to participate in the selection process and be assessed.

HOW THE JURY WORKS

The jury, which is different for each year that the Design S selection process occurs, consists of well known designers and design experts with extensive experience. The chair of the jury is Jacob Lind, CEO of Futurniture.
The jury meets for several days in March at the premises of Svensk Form and assesses all submissions. The jury may ask at short notice that original works be sent to it for assessment.

THE JURY WORK A TWO STEP PROCESS

Nomination – First the jury will choose which submissions will be nominated for a Design S. All these nominees will be included in an exhibition which will tour Sweden and other countries during 2010–2011. The exhibition will also be presented online.

Selection – The jury will then select from among the nominees a smaller number of submissions, which will be presented at a ceremony with a Design S sculpture in a material that is new and exciting for each Design S year.

  • The jury can nominate a maximum of 50 submissions and select a maximum of 15 of these to receive the Design S.
  • The presentation ceremony will take place on 8 June 2010 in conjunction with Design S Day at the Swedish Museum of Architecture.
  • The jury may select from among the nominees a submission for special mention on the grounds of sustainability.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
The jury will consider the following criteria when assessing the submissions:

THE MAIN CRITERION FOR ALL SUBMISSIONS:

Innovativeness and creativity
How innovative and creative is the submission?

THE JURY WILL ALSO ASSES THE SUBMISSION BASED ON ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

Business value
How does the design solution contribute to business value? E.g. increased sales or market share, lower costs, or the development of an industry.

Sustainability
How does the design solution contribute to long-term sustainable development? E.g. from an accessibility, environmental, social, and/or economic viewpoint.

Function
How does the design solution contribute to improved useabllity or function?

Communication
How well does the physical form or interpretation of the concept communicate the purpose? E.g. give added value, reinforce an identity, convey a message or build opinion.

Implementation
How well implemented is the result? A quality assessment of the submission as a whole.

WHAT DOES DESIGN S INVOLVE FOR THE NOMINATED AND SELECTED SUBMISSIONS?

The jury produces a written statement about each nominated or selected submission. The statement can be used for marketing purposes by the submitting party.

At the Design S presentation ceremony, selected submissions will receive a Design S sculpture in a material which is new and exciting in the context of the specific Design S year. The Design S 2006 sculpture was made of recycled computer monitors and the Design S 2008 sculpture was made of spruce wood.

Selected and nominated submissions will receive a framed diploma at the Design S presentation ceremony.

Selected submissions will be permitted to use the Design S quality label, which indicates that the company that made the submission is working strategically with design within the areas of product and business development. The company can use the quality label as a competitive advantage as part of its corporate identity programme.

All nominated submissions will be included in the Design S exhibition, which will go on a Swedish and international tour in 2010–2011. The exhibition will also be presented online.

Designers of the selected submissions will be invited to participate in seminars and workshops in conjunction with the travelling exhibition. Svensk Form will invite those responsible for the selected submissions to participate as speakers at Pecha Kucha events throughout Sweden.

All recipients of the Design S will be presented in Swedish and English in the exhibition catalogue and with texts and the inclusion of their products in the touring and online exhibitions.

Svensk Form invests considerable effort in stimulating media interest in the Design S selection process and in the selected submissions. Almost 300 media reports were made in conjunction with Design S 2008-2009. Svensk Form will collaborate with the industry- and daily press.
