DESIGN D - A DAY FOR KNOWLEDGE AND INSPIRATION

DESIGN D – a day for knowledge and inspiration

TIME:
Tuesday 8 June 9.30 – 17.00 Design S ceremony 17.00 – approx. 20.00
PLACE: Skeppsholmen in Stockholm, meeting place Arkitekturmuseet (Swedish Architecture Museum)

Customise your own programme from among the morning’s solid workshops and the afternoon’s lectures. We discuss topical issues with our starting point in history. Short inspirational lectures are sandwiched between in-depth analyses by specially invited experts, including Cara McCarthy from the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, who will highlight design’s role today, Johan Thackara, founder of Doors of Perception, who will focus on ”business as unusual” and Cameron Sinclair who will talk about reconstruction in areas afflicted by crises.

As a participant in Design D you are also invited to take part in this year’s Design S ceremony. The minister of culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth will hand out Design S in a festive atmosphere, and open the exhibition with all those nominated.

Design D is arranged by Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design) in collaboration with the Architecture Museum, The Centre for Business History, SVID, the Swedish Industrial Design Foundation and the Swedish Travelling Exhibitions.

PROGRAMME:

09.30-10.00 Registration and gathering at the Architecture museum’s entrance
10.00-12.00 Four parallel Workshops

UNG & MATCH MAKING

Workshop leader Karin Wiberg project leader UNG
Place: Prästgården, Svensk Form

Part 1: Part 1: Call to UNG: It’s time to send your contributions in to round 8. Information about UNG, which promotes design by young designers and is run by Form/Design center in Malmö in collaboration with Svensk Form. Q&A: Why UNG? How can I join? Who is on the jury? When is the opening day?

Part 2: Individual showing of portfolios and free advice about intellectual property law, the writing of contracts, etc. You will be welcomed by representatives from Svensk Form and Brann in a steady stream in situ. The principle of “First come, first served” applies.

NET FOR EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE?

Workshop leader: Maria Forssén
Place: Hörsalen Arkitekturmuseet
Signed-up Participants: Judith Wolst, social media guru who works with social media at the PR-bureau Hallvarsson & Halvarsson and has her own blog called Internetionalisering, Charlotte Wormbs who helps entrepreneurs to set up sites and achieve profitability from them and also has her own site www.spaprodukter.nu, Katarina Chowra is an expert in mobile marketing, Iphone apps, mobile sites, coupons, etc. She can help to create traffic to events, sales, to shops etc. via text messages with discount coupons or simply reminders that ensure that people/clients turn up, Maryem Nasri, expert in Google Adwords who has worked with converting traffic to market-leading online companies now helps companies to fine-tune their communication on the net by setting up a Google Adwords account and writing SEO-texts that give better visibility on Google.

Everyone is talking about social media and their uses. But what is right for me and my company? What should I choose and what should I avoid? How can I make sales through social media? Does e-commerce actually work? How can I measure the results? Is it true that the young people today only accept visual and moving messages? Goals or means? Quantity or quality?

THE EXHIBITION AS DESIGN ARENA

Workshop leader: Louise Andersson, Swedish Travelling Exhibitions
Signed-up participants: Cara McCarthy, chief curator Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, Sara Szyber, designer, Matilda Plöjel, office for architecture and graphic design.

What sort of challenges and opportunities do you encounter when working with exhibitions? The exhibition medium is spatial, multi-medial, social, experience-based, artistic and creates meaning. But it is also full of practical parameters and physical prerequisites such as spatial contexts, choice of transport, objects and artefacts. Can we justify touring exhibitions from a climate perspective, and how might the alternative look? We investigate how the exhibition can be elevated as a design area through experience and visions by both the exhibition designers and curators in order to give the visitors something very special.

DESIGN AND PROFITABILITY

Workshop leader: Robin Edman, VD SVID
Signed-up participants: Lars Bülow, Materia, Richard Sohlberg, chairman of the board No PicNic, Lisbeth Svengren, Borås School of Textiles, Krister Torssell, Ergonomidesign, Lars Leijon, Privilegium Group.

It isn’t enough just to do and be competent. We have to learn how to sell as well. What does it take for design companies and I myself to earn money from my profession? How can we strengthen Swedish design companies? How should design companies argue for their own thing and motivate the design investment? Developmental tips for design management and strategies? How can we improve the communication between designers and industry and when can design become a part of a company’s developmental process?
